Cante flamenco also called corrido
o corrida originated from Andalusian popular “romances” of a particular
intonation. Originally sung
without musical accompaniment, it is likely romances were the most
primitive style of flamenco from which “tonás” originated.
The musical
origins of romances are found in the folk songs of the diverse people
who inhabited the Spanish peninsula over the centuries.
The romance transformed, especially in Andalucía, becoming more
musical and accompanied by the guitar.
The Castillian-Andalusian romance gave way to the romance
flamenco. Although today
mostly sung in the compás of Soleá por Bulerías, romances may vary
according to location as exemplified by those from Cádiz, Utrera and
Jerez. Intermediate/Advanced Dance Technique: Instructor Pilar Andújar April 14th, 15th, & 16th 10:30am - 12pm
This workshop is for students who
have had training in flamenco and have a basic understanding of
footwork, braceo and posture.
After a complete warm-up, exercises in basic footwork, flamenco
arms and hands, we will continue with turns, palmas and posture while
moving in space. Class
emphasis will be on developing new techniques to different “compases”
adhering to that stated by Antonio
Gades: “The most important
thing is not the step, but what there is between each step.” Introduction to Cante: Instructors Irma La Paloma accompanied by Professor Jeremías García April 14th, 15th & 16th 12:15 - 1:45pm This workshop will provide an introduction to cante history, letra, tono, phrasing and structure. Participants will learn basic letras por tangos accompanied by guitar. Basic understanding of Spanish is recommended, but non-Spanish speakers are welcome. Bring your singing voices for an interactive cante experience! Introduction to Flamenco Guitar: Instructor Professor Jeremías García April 14th, 15th, & 16th 10:30am - 12pm This workshop is designed to introduce the guitarist to compás, techniques and basic theoretical concepts of flamenco music as it applies to the guitar. The student should have a nylon string guitar (preferably with a golpeador) and a basic understanding of finger-style techniques. As this workshop is designed to work in conjunction with the Cante/Guitar Workshop, we will be exploring Tango accompaniment and falsetas. Flamenco Cajón & Palmas : Instructor Maestro Timo Lozano April 14th, 15th & 16th 12:15 - 1:45pm The cajón or box drum is a great tool for teaching the compás or rhythm so integral to flamenco. Maestro Lozano uses a unique method of teaching bulerías where participants develop an immediate sense of inner compás. Participants will receive instruction on cajón and palmas (handclapping) technique, accents and dynamics for accompaniment por bulerías and tangos. This workshop is open to participants of all levels of experience. You can purchase a cajón at Guitar Center or at various locations online. Castanets/Castañuelas: Instructor Solangel "Lali" Calix April 14th, 15th & 16th 3:45 - 4:45pm Participants will learn the fundamental technique of the castanets, Spain’s national instrument. Exercises for dexterity and phrasing for Spanish classical as well as toque por sevillanas and fandangos will be imparted. Participants are required to bring castanets which can be purchased at Guitar Center, online or at any retail music store. Cuadro Communication Instructors Irma La Paloma, Professor Jeremías García & Maestro Timo Lozano April 14th, 15th & 16th 2:00 - 3:30pm This workshop is designed to identify and explain key signals which are conveyed and perceived in the cuadro or flamenco performance. Active participation will render an inside view and understanding of the communication and dynamics between flamenco cante, guitarra, baile, percussion and jaleo. ©2011 Houston Spanish & Flamenco Festival/Solero Flamenco LLC *All contents are protected under U.S. copyright law and may not be reproduced without written consent* |
